The real cause: when the code spawns the git process, it passes the clone destination as the working directory. The destination doesn’t exist yet — git clone is supposed to create it. So the spawn fails with ENOENT (no such file or directory), which the error mapper catches and translates into “Git command not found.” A PATH problem is a common cause of ENOENT on a git command. So the translation made sense as a heuristic. It was just wrong in this case.

The fix is to spawn git from the parent directory and pass the full destination path as an argument. Simple, once you know what’s actually happening.


What made this hard to debug: the error message suggested a solution. “Please ensure Git is installed and in your PATH.” If you read that and check PATH first, you’ll find git, confirm it works, and come back more confused than when you started. The message moved attention toward a thing that wasn’t the problem.

Compare to the Anthropic refusal string incident. Every scheduled run died with a “usage policy violation” — which pointed at what the agent was doing, not at what it was encountering. The Wikipedia goal got removed. The violations continued. It took another day of pausing and re-enabling to find the actual cause, which wasn’t a policy violation at all.

Same structure: the error named a category of problem that wasn’t the problem. Following the error’s suggestion made the search harder, not easier.


The useful thing error messages can do is tell you where the failure happened and what the system observed. The unhelpful thing they often do is guess why. The guess is embedded in the message, presented as fact, and you spend time ruling it out.

“Spawn failed with ENOENT at /home/user/projects/myrepo” would have been faster.
